A New Favorite Color

Oh I see that Dixie Belle Paint Company - my favorite! - just launched a new Cottage Collection of colors. Normally I go for bold colors, but not everyone likes my work. Truth hurts! These colors are a mix of soft but not too "sweet" pastels, and are perfect for that "cottage" look - think lavendar fields, cute litte cabins on a grassy mountain side, goats & sheep, soft florals, picnics & big, floppy hats!

They will be available for sale on the site in the near future. I am partial to the Cucumber Ice and my personal favorite of the new bunch: Cottage Door. The Ice is a white with a green undertone - will go great with the Ivy Green and Weeping Willow. 


And the Ivy Green looks fab paired with the metallic gold here! That matte look is so striking next to the vibrant gold: 

 

Can't wait to try something less drama-rama painting in these pretty colors!

Brushstrokes for Different Folks

When you usually think of paint, you think of smooth finishes. Most people find brushstrokes a bane to painted pieces. Others think they give a distinct home-made type feel. It's not easy to completely avoid brushstrokes but there are some tips to help minimize them, esp when using chalk and mineral and clay type heavier paints. To avoid all brushstrokes, use a sprayer! [That's for another post.] But these tips will help you get that glidin' smoooooth finish you want:  Apply thin, even coats of paint. You can thin thicker paint with water and mix well. Keep the brush damp by misting it with water before dipping it in the paint. Paint in the same direction as the wood grain using long, parallel strokes. Use a brush with the right sheen and stiffness. Brushes with stiff bristles will leave brush strokes. However, too-soft brushes can become oversaturated with paint.
