Don't Paint That! You'll Ruin It!

 Was scrolling through some Facebook posts of amazing furniture artists. And they are indeed artists! There were some comments from people to the effect of, "Don't paint that! You'll ruin it!" and I had to laugh. For a time I had a job helping a woman with estate sales. They were a lot of hard work. The furniture though - that was the worst (well, other than going through someone else's things 😦). No one wanted it. The kids never wanted that "old brown furniture". Even if it was well made and would last - they'd usually rather buy from big box stores or IKEA (no offense to IKEA - love that store! but let's be real; their stuff is not made to endure decades and decades).

So this UPCYCLING bespoke furniture has taken ahold. Here are my arguments against those naysayers!

Upcycling allows us to breathe new life into tired pieces, unleashing their hidden potential and creating something truly unique. However, some may view this practice as "ruining" furniture. Let's delve into why upcycling is not about destruction but rather a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and preserving the beauty of the past.

Brushstrokes for Different Folks

When you usually think of paint, you think of smooth finishes. Most people find brushstrokes a bane to painted pieces. Others think they give a distinct home-made type feel. It's not easy to completely avoid brushstrokes but there are some tips to help minimize them, esp when using chalk and mineral and clay type heavier paints. To avoid all brushstrokes, use a sprayer! [That's for another post.] But these tips will help you get that glidin' smoooooth finish you want:  Apply thin, even coats of paint. You can thin thicker paint with water and mix well. Keep the brush damp by misting it with water before dipping it in the paint. Paint in the same direction as the wood grain using long, parallel strokes. Use a brush with the right sheen and stiffness. Brushes with stiff bristles will leave brush strokes. However, too-soft brushes can become oversaturated with paint.
