Color Matcher

 Are you the type of person who can build an entire room or even house design around a piece of art, a piece of furniture, even a throw pillow? You are my kind of people! Sometimes you find a piece that just makes you feel so good and you want to extend that feeling throughout your living space. It doesn't even have to be something that goes INTO a particular room. For example, a client had a cozy sweater that her grandmother had knitted for her. It was a lovely light coral color, and every time she wore it, she felt as if she were in the presence of a warm embrace. She wanted to bring this feeling into her home.

But how to get the right color match? You could go to paint stores and check lots of color swatches, or ask a paint mixer to try to match using a sample.

But I have a much EASIER way for you to try! Dixie Belle's Color Matcher. This thing is the bombdiggity! No one else has this exact feature. I use it ALL THE TIME. 

Here's how you use it:

  1. Go to the Color Lab in the main menu on Dixie Belle Paint Co site and select "Match a Color" from the drop down in the menu. 


  2. Upload a picture - could be anything - a piece of art, clothes, wallpaper, fabric- you name it! The application will extract the main colors from whatever you upload and you can choose one you're after. Too many color selections? Crop your pic and re-upload. 


  3. Click on the color box that you like


  4. The site will then display the color AND how to make it! 


  5. It will also show you complementary and analagous colors - if you are looking for accent colors etc. to tie other things in


  6. There is also a little calculator for you to best determine how much paint you will need for a project (eg a lamp vs a large armoire). It provides you with a recipe for making the paint - xx part Color 1 and xx parts Color 2. 


  7. And finally, you can simply click "Add to cart" and it will put them in the cart for you. Easy peasy!

Brushstrokes for Different Folks

When you usually think of paint, you think of smooth finishes. Most people find brushstrokes a bane to painted pieces. Others think they give a distinct home-made type feel. It's not easy to completely avoid brushstrokes but there are some tips to help minimize them, esp when using chalk and mineral and clay type heavier paints. To avoid all brushstrokes, use a sprayer! [That's for another post.] But these tips will help you get that glidin' smoooooth finish you want:  Apply thin, even coats of paint. You can thin thicker paint with water and mix well. Keep the brush damp by misting it with water before dipping it in the paint. Paint in the same direction as the wood grain using long, parallel strokes. Use a brush with the right sheen and stiffness. Brushes with stiff bristles will leave brush strokes. However, too-soft brushes can become oversaturated with paint.
